Nvidia Warns of RTX 5090/5080 Shortages

by Joshua Mar 14,2025

The highly anticipated Nvidia RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are set to launch on January 30th, but reports from retailers and manufacturers are raising concerns about significant shortages. With eager buyers already lining up outside stores, these GPUs are shaping up to be incredibly sought-after, despite their hefty price tags of $1,999 and $999 respectively.

Manufacturer MSI, as reported by WCCFTech, attributes the initial supply constraints to the Lunar New Year, impacting the first wave of card shipments. Stock levels are expected to improve throughout February and beyond.

Several retailers have echoed these concerns, highlighting particularly low stock levels for the RTX 5090. Overclockers UK, for example, reported receiving only a small number of units, while PowerGPU warned of extremely limited availability.

In response to the growing anxiety, Nvidia representative Tim@Nvidia issued a statement on the company forum acknowledging the anticipated high demand and potential for stock-outs. They assured consumers that Nvidia and its partners are working to increase retail shipments daily.

However, the limited supply is already fueling speculation amongst scalpers. Pre-sale listings on eBay are already showcasing inflated prices, with one Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090 listed for a staggering $5,750 – a massive 187% markup.

Adding to Nvidia's challenges this week, the company's share price experienced a significant 16.86% drop on Monday following the emergence of the Chinese AI model DeepSeek. DeepSeek's relatively low training cost raises questions about the future of Nvidia's datacenter GPU sales.
