Original Harry Potter Director Calls HBO Reboot a 'Spectacular Idea'

by Penelope Apr 01,2025

Original Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has hailed the upcoming HBO reboot series as a "spectacular idea" due to its potential to more faithfully recreate the books. In a recent interview with People, Columbus explained that during his time directing "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," he faced limitations due to the films' relatively short runtimes. He noted that the team made every effort to include as much of the book's content as possible, but there were inherent constraints.

"I think it's a spectacular idea because there’s a certain restriction when you’re making a film," Columbus remarked. "Our film was two hours and 40 minutes, and the second one was almost as long. The fact that they have the luxury of [multiple] episodes for each book, I think that's fantastic. You can get all the stuff in the series that we didn't have an opportunity to do... All these great scenes that we just couldn't put in the films."

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series on HBO is set to be a "faithful adaptation" of the novels, aiming to deliver a more "in-depth" narrative than what a two-hour film can achieve. The show will be spearheaded by Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, both known for their work on "Succession," with Mylod also having contributed to "Game of Thrones."

Currently, HBO is in the process of casting for the iconic roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. In a humorous nod to his own aging, original Sirius Black actor Gary Oldman suggested he might be the right age to take on the role of Dumbledore, having first appeared in "The Prisoner of Azkaban" 20 years ago. Meanwhile, acclaimed actor and playwright Mark Rylance is reportedly at the top of the casting wishlist for the role of Hogwarts' headmaster, maintaining the franchise's tradition of casting British actors. This choice aligns with the involvement of the series' original author, J.K. Rowling, who is said to be "fairly involved" in the casting process.

Filming for the Harry Potter TV show is slated to begin in spring 2025, with HBO aiming for a release in 2026.
