Paul Rudd Nostalgically Promotes Nintendo Switch 2, Echoing 90s SNES Ad

by Peyton Apr 24,2025

Nintendo has enlisted the charismatic actor Paul Rudd to generate excitement for the Nintendo Switch 2 in a new commercial that lovingly recreates the charm of a memorable 90s ad he starred in for the Super Nintendo. The original 1991 commercial featured Rudd, sporting a distinctive black jacket, beaded necklace, and an iconic hairstyle, as he confidently approached a drive-in movie theater with his SNES. Hooking it up to a giant screen, he played fan-favorites like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, F-Zero, and Sim City, drawing a curious crowd. The ad concluded with the iconic SNES slogan: "Now you're playing with power."

In the new Nintendo Switch 2 commercial, despite the passage of 34 years, Rudd's appearance remains strikingly similar, complete with the same coat, necklace, and hairstyle. This time, he strides into a living room and sets up a Nintendo Switch 2 to enjoy a game of Mario Kart World with comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, alongside a child who affectionately calls him "Uncle Paul." The group utilizes the system's innovative GameChat feature, playfully ribbing Rudd about his nostalgic 90s attire and the dramatic elements like a fog machine and fan that recreate the intensity of the original ad. The commercial ends with Rudd's updated slogan, "Now we're playing together," embracing the playful and cheesy tone of the original while celebrating the new era of gaming.

IGN had the opportunity to interview Rudd about his experience shooting this sequel to his iconic Nintendo commercial after over three decades. Rudd shared amusing anecdotes, including his suspicion that he wore his own beaded necklace in the original ad and that he continued playing Mario Kart World on set during breaks. Sadly, he wasn't allowed to keep a Nintendo Switch 2 as a souvenir. You can watch the full interview here:
