PGA Tour 2K25: The Final Preview

by Sebastian Mar 21,2025

If you polled golf game fans about which pro sports series they'd most like to see 2K tackle next, a NFL 2K revival would likely top the list. Even MLB or NHL might rank higher than a golf game. Yet, 2K is back for a third swing with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's quite enjoyable.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago before partnering with 2K. That experience shows in 2K25. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking some real-world courses (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is solid. I encountered minor issues like occasional choppy framerates on PC when surveying holes, but overall, it was fun.

PlayThe upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, I preferred the right stick option: pull down to wind up, press forward to strike. Difficulty settings adjust forgiveness, allowing for realistic slices and hooks on harder settings or a more relaxed experience on easier settings. LB lets you shape shots, offering extra control. Improved ball physics and lateral movement on the tee box add to the strategic depth. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, certainly helped!

MyCareer mode receives a boost with narrative mechanics, offering choices impacting stat boosts. A memorable moment involved a movie role offer from Christopher “Shooter McGavin” McDonald (present in the game, though not as his Happy Gilmore character). Gear purchased with VC also affects stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. Added Quests, refreshed weekly, provide ongoing goals like achieving 10 consecutive birdies.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, allowed for reasonable character customization, complemented by skill trees. Multiplayer, unfortunately untested, promises ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies for social play, reminiscent of *Links 2004*. Asynchronous options cater to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to get overly excited, but it appears to be a solid choice for golf fans and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is available now, allowing you to experience it firsthand.
