Disney World Expands Piston Peak Park to Record Size

by Aurora Nov 12,2025

Disney has unveiled details about Piston Peak National Park, the upcoming Cars-inspired expansion slated as Magic Kingdom's largest ever development.

According to Disney Parks Blog, construction begins this summer requiring temporary closures starting July 7 for the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and Liberty Square Riverboat attractions.

The Frontierland addition will transport guests to a fictional yet remarkably realistic wilderness landscape inspired by America's national parks.

"Envision majestic forests, snow-capped peaks, cascading waterfalls, rushing rivers and erupting geysers," Disney describes. "While Piston Peak is imagined, its design draws from Rocky Mountain vistas and iconic frontier landmarks."

Themed areas will include Ranger HQ, visitor lodges, and wilderness trails featuring "Parkitecture" - a National Park Service-inspired design philosophy blending structures with natural surroundings.

Carefully positioned forests will seamlessly transition between Piston Peak and existing Frontierland areas, while dramatic mountain ranges and water features will create visual connections with attractions like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Originally announced at D23 2024, the land will debut two innovative attractions: an off-road rally adventure navigating mountain trails and geysers, plus a family-friendly experience designed for all ages.

Disney showcased prototype ride vehicles at SXSW 2025, engineering unique motion systems to capture the Cars' personalities. Each vehicle features distinctive names and designs reflecting the franchise's colorful characters.

Piston Peak represents just one phase of Magic Kingdom's transformation, with future plans including Disney Villains-themed areas. Near-term additions include the Starlight nighttime parade launching July 20 and the Pirates-inspired Beak and Barrel tavern opening later this year.
