PlatinumGames Celebrates Bayonetta

PlatinumGames is gearing up to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the iconic game, Bayonetta, with a yearlong event in 2025, expressing gratitude to the dedicated fans who have supported the series throughout the years. The original Bayonetta, released on October 29, 2009, in Japan and January 2010 globally, was directed by the renowned Hideki Kamiya, known for his work on Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe. Players were introduced to Bayonetta, a formidable Umbra Witch, whose battles against supernatural foes were characterized by guns, extravagant martial arts, and her magically-empowered hair.

The first installment of Bayonetta received widespread acclaim for its innovative premise and fast-paced, Devil May Cry-inspired gameplay. Bayonetta quickly emerged as a standout female anti-hero in video games. Initially published by Sega and available on multiple platforms, the subsequent sequels shifted to Nintendo's platforms as first-party exclusives on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. In 2023, fans were treated to a prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, on the Switch, which showcased a younger version of the protagonist. Additionally, Bayonetta's adult incarnation became a playable character in the latest Super Smash Bros. games.

As 2025 marks the 15th anniversary of the original Bayonetta, PlatinumGames took to social media to thank fans for their enduring support and announced the "Bayonetta 15th Anniversary Year." Throughout 2025, the studio plans to unveil a series of special announcements and themed products. While specifics remain under wraps, PlatinumGames encourages fans to stay tuned on their social media channels for upcoming reveals.

2025 Marks the 15th Anniversary of Bayonetta

Already, Wayo Records has launched a limited-edition Bayonetta music box, inspired by the original Super Mirror from the game, playing the enchanting melody of "Theme Of Bayonetta - Mysterious Destiny" by Masami Ueda, the composer behind Resident Evil and Okami. In addition, PlatinumGames is delighting fans with monthly Bayonetta-themed smartphone calendar wallpapers, with January's design showcasing Bayonetta and Jeanne in kimonos under a full moon.

Even after 15 years, the original Bayonetta continues to be celebrated for enhancing the stylish action genre pioneered by Devil May Cry, introducing innovative mechanics like the slow-motion Witch Time, and setting the stage for future PlatinumGames hits such as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier: Automata. As the 15th anniversary celebrations unfold, fans should keep an eye out for exciting announcements and special releases.
