Mastering Path of Exile 2's Expedition Endgame: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame system from the original game. This guide details Expedition mechanics, rewards, and the crucial passive skill tree.

Expedition Mechanics & Detonation

Expeditions are marked by a light blue spiral icon on the Atlas. An Expedition Precursor Tablet placed in a completed Lost Tower slot guarantees an Expedition encounter. Within the Expedition zone, locate the central Detonator and four NPCs.

The core gameplay involves strategically placing Explosives near Markers to summon Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests.

  • Runic Monsters: Spawn near Red Markers; larger markers yield larger monster packs. Their power is amplified by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: Relics with modifiers (e.g., increased monster elemental damage, increased chest rarity).
  • Excavated Chests: Spawn near Black Markers with the spiral symbol; contain Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, and high-tier gear.

Use the Explosives UI to visualize AoE. Avoid overlapping AoE circles for optimal farming. Detonate Explosives via the Detonator. You can safely retreat after detonation and return to engage enemies later.

Expedition Pinnacle Map

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests drop Expedition Logbooks. Use these with Dannig in your hideout to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map – a significantly larger Expedition with more Explosives.

This map features Olroth, a Pinnacle Boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth awards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Located in the Atlas Passive Skill Tree, the Expedition tree enhances rewards and difficulty. Points are earned primarily by defeating Olroth. Increasing Logbook difficulty is required to unlock new Notable nodes.

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius by 150%, range by 100%, and reduces enemy Life by 20% N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always have 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, detonation chains 50% faster N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chests, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," "Timed Detonations," "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles." Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in Explosives.

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are the primary currency. Four types exist, each used with a specific vendor for unique gear.

Reward Use Gear
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen Belts & Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig Used to acquire other Artifacts
Exotic Coinage Refreshes vendor inventory N/A

Expedition Logbooks unlock Pinnacle Maps with Olroth, offering high-tier currency and unique items. The higher the Logbook difficulty, the higher the chance of Olroth spawning and better rewards.
