Power Rangers Retrospection: Rita's Time Warp Resonates with Past

The upcoming beat 'em up, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, is packed with nods to the classic franchise, including last year's reunion special, Once and Always. This retro-style brawler features Robo Rita as its main antagonist. Announced at Summer Games Fest 2024, the game boasts five-player co-op, enemies from the first three seasons, and even 3D rail-shooter segments. It's launching on PC and consoles later this year.

The Power Rangers franchise has seen some ups and downs recently. Following Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always and Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury, the show itself is currently on hiatus. Once and Always featured the original team reuniting to stop a robotic Rita Repulsa from altering the past. This special was filled with Easter eggs and emotional moments, culminating in a tribute to the late Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank.

Robo Rita's return from Once and Always as the main villain in Rita's Rewind is no accident. Digital Eclipse's Dan Amrich explained to Time Express that Once and Always' depiction of Robo Rita attempting to use a time portal provided a perfect in-universe connection for the new game's storyline.

Amrich also described pitching the game to Hasbro, who were interested in expanding their Power Rangers properties. Both Hasbro and the developers drew inspiration from classic 2D brawlers popular during the MMPR era, ensuring plenty of Easter eggs for dedicated fans.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind is a love letter to the franchise, blending classic gameplay with newer lore. While its release is slated for later this year, fans can currently enjoy a crossover with ARK: Survival Ascended.
