PS5 Disc Drive Is Back in Stock, But You May Need to Act Fast

by Olivia Mar 04,2025

PS5 Disc Drive Restocks at Select US Retailers – But Act Fast!

The PlayStation 5 disc drive is back in stock at some major US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given past trends, this limited stock is expected to sell out quickly.

The ongoing shortage is likely linked to the release of the PS5 Pro, which doesn't offer a disc drive option. This means gamers wanting the enhanced performance of the Pro and the ability to play physical games must purchase the disc drive separately. This increased demand, coupled with the initial release of the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition in 2020, has contributed to the persistent supply issues.

While Amazon US and PlayStation Direct are currently selling the disc drive for its standard price of $79.99, availability is limited. PlayStation Direct, in particular, restricts orders to one per customer to counter scalping. One third-party seller on Walmart was also found to be selling the drive, but at a significantly inflated price of $122, and with very limited stock. Major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy remain out of stock.

Where to Buy (as of this writing):

Store Price
Amazon US $79.99
PlayStation Direct $79.99
Walmart (Reseller) $122

The shortage continues to frustrate PS5 owners in the US, and a similar situation has emerged in the UK. The situation highlights the impact of the PS5 Pro's design choice on the availability of the disc drive accessory.
