Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have established themselves as timeless classics in the gaming world, continuing to achieve remarkable sales figures years after their initial releases. These titles are a testament to Rockstar's ability to create immersive, high-quality open-world experiences that resonate deeply with gamers worldwide.
Grand Theft Auto 5, released in 2013, immerses players in the bustling, crime-ridden city of Los Santos, where they control three aspiring criminals. The game's initial success was further amplified by its re-releases on multiple platforms and the addition of a highly popular online multiplayer mode. These factors have cemented GTA 5's place as one of the best-selling entertainment products in history. On the other hand, Red Dead Redemption 2, launched in 2018, takes players back to the rugged landscapes of the Old West, following the journey of outlaw Arthur Morgan. This game, too, has garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success.
Despite nearly 12 years having passed since GTA 5's launch and almost seven years since Red Dead Redemption 2's release, both games continue to dominate sales charts. In December 2024, PlayStation's monthly download chart revealed that Grand Theft Auto 5 was the third highest-selling title for the PS5 in both the US/Canada and Europe, and also ranked fifth for the PS4 in the same regions. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 topped the sales chart for the PS4 in the United States and secured the second spot in the EU, only surpassed by EA Sports FC 25.
GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Are Still Topping PlayStation Sales Charts
The European 2024 GSD figures, as reported by VGC, show that Grand Theft Auto 5 was the fourth highest-selling title of the past year, improving from fifth place in 2023. Red Dead Redemption 2 also climbed the ranks, securing seventh place, up from eighth the previous year. According to Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, GTA 5 has now sold over 205 million copies, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has surpassed 67 million units sold.
The enduring popularity of these titles highlights the lasting appeal of Rockstar's creations. As fans eagerly anticipate the future of these franchises, the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to launch later this year, and there are whispers of a potential port of Red Dead Redemption 2 to the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 console.
