New Releases and Reviews: Ace Attorney and More

by Carter Feb 13,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind cherished memories. I'm feeling a bit wiser, and grateful for sharing that journey with you all. As autumn arrives, I want to express my appreciation – you're the best gaming companions anyone could ask for! Today's article is packed with reviews, new releases, and sales. Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many classic games. Trials of Mana, Live A Live, the original Fire Emblem, and now, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection – finally bringing Miles Edgeworth's adventures to English speakers. This collection builds upon previous storylines, with the sequel enhancing the original. The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. While the core mechanics remain similar (gathering clues, questioning witnesses), the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a distinct flavor. The pacing can feel uneven at times, but fans of the main series will appreciate this spin-off. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.

Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the option to toggle between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A helpful dialogue history feature is also included. The two games offer a compelling contrast, creating a fantastic overall experience. The localization of the second game is a major win, and the additional extras make this a must-have for Ace Attorney enthusiasts. With this release, almost every Ace Attorney title (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is surprising, given the original's limited Western release. Developed by Bitwave Games, this sequel stays true to the original, perhaps even too much for some. Six challenging physics-based platforming levels await, pushing players to their limits. A new easier mode is welcome, but the standard difficulty remains unforgiving. Yumetaro's star attack returns as a versatile tool for combat and puzzle-solving. Collectibles add replayability, offering customization options.

While not overly long, the game's difficulty is comparable to the original. Frequent deaths are expected, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain a positive tone, but don't underestimate the challenge. Gimmick! 2 cleverly expands upon its predecessor without losing its identity. Fans of the original and challenging platformers will adore this. However, casual gamers should be warned – this is no walk in the park.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style. Surprisingly, it works well, though performance can be affected on the Switch. The intense action, soundtrack, and visuals remain engaging. Weapon management is key, balancing your main gun, melee weapon, and a rotating third weapon. Mastering the rhythm of weapon usage and dodging enemy fire is crucial and rewarding.

While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion maintains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. While other platforms may offer better performance, the Switch version is still enjoyable.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater to existing fans. Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash delivers ample fan service, excelling in its presentation of the source material. The writing is good, and the meta-systems reward dedicated fans. However, the game lacks appeal for those unfamiliar with Umamusume. The mini-games are repetitive and limited, offering little engagement for non-fans.

Even for fans, the game's focus might feel misplaced. While the visuals, audio, and world are well-executed, the limited content might lead to quick burnout. The unlockable mini-game is a highlight, but it's not enough to save the overall experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit games are finally getting their due. This collection features three localized titles: Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. Each game includes save states, rewind, display options, and an art gallery. The full localization is a significant achievement.

The games themselves are a mixed bag. 53 Stations is frustrating but charming, Ripple Island is a decent adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. While not top-tier NES titles, they're not bad either. Fans of Sunsoft and retro gaming will appreciate this collection. It's a great way to experience these previously unlocalized gems.
