Robert Eggers Set to Helm Labyrinth Sequel

by Victoria Apr 02,2025

Robert Eggers, fresh off the success of his gothic horror film "Nosferatu," is set to embark on a new project that will excite fans of classic fantasy cinema. He will write and direct a sequel to the beloved 1986 film "Labyrinth," originally directed by Jim Henson and starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Eggers will co-write the script with Sjón, his collaborator on "The Northman."

The original "Labyrinth" follows the story of a young girl, played by Jennifer Connelly, who must navigate a fantastical labyrinth to rescue her baby brother, kidnapped by the Goblin King Jareth, portrayed by David Bowie. The film is celebrated for its imaginative world filled with memorable Henson puppets.

Previously, a sequel to "Labyrinth" was in development with Scott Derrickson, known for "Sinister," attached to direct. However, with no progress since 2023, TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have opted to move forward with Eggers at the helm.

In addition to the "Labyrinth" sequel, Eggers is also working on a werewolf movie titled "Werwulf," slated for a Christmas 2026 release. Set in 13th century England, the film will feature dialogue in Old English and is expected to include transformations into a wolf-like creature.

Eggers' recent release, "Nosferatu," a remake of the 1922 silent film by F.W. Murnau, has been well-received, earning four Oscar nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Set in 19th century Germany, "Nosferatu" tells the story of a young real estate agent who encounters vampiric horrors after visiting Transylvania.
