Rocksteady Seeks Game Director for New Batman Game

by Henry Apr 16,2025

Rocksteady Studios is setting the stage for its next major project, as evidenced by a recent job listing from Warner Bros. Discovery on February 17 for a Game Director. This pivotal role will see the successful candidate spearheading the creation of a "high-quality game design," covering a broad spectrum from core gameplay mechanics and player progression to combat systems and mission design. The job description emphasizes the need for experience in diverse genres, including third-person action, open-world adventures, and melee combat games, fueling speculation that Rocksteady may be considering a return to the beloved Batman universe—a franchise that initially catapulted the studio to fame.

The Batman: Arkham series, known for its focus on melee combat and intricate game design, closely matches these job requirements, in contrast to Rocksteady's most recent release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which leaned more heavily on gunplay. Given that the studio is still in the early stages of hiring, the new project is likely still in its conceptual phase. Industry insider Jason Schreier has suggested that if Rocksteady does decide to develop a new single-player Batman game, fans should not anticipate its release for several years.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which debuted on February 2, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam, has garnered mixed reviews. Critics have rated it at 63 out of 100, while player feedback on Metacritic stands at a 4.2 out of 10. Amidst this backdrop, earlier reports and rumors have hinted that Rocksteady might be revisiting the Batman franchise, with whispers of a project inspired by the Batman Beyond animated series.
