Crowe, Cavill to Star in Highlander Remake

by Sebastian Dec 30,2025

Russell Crowe is poised to reunite with his *Man of Steel* co-star, Henry Cavill, for the upcoming remake of *Highlander*.

Initial reports on this significant casting development come from Collider, which indicates the 61-year-old Academy Award winner for *Gladiator* has joined the project in a pivotal role. The film is a new vision from *John Wick* creator Chad Stahelski. Crowe is expected to portray Cavill's mentor, offering a fresh take on the character originally played by Sean Connery in the 1986 film (via Deadline).

Specific details on how the *Highlander* remake will modernize the story, along with further casting announcements, are currently being kept under wraps. However, Stahelski previously shared with Collider: "We’re advancing the setting from the early 1500s Scottish Highlands to contemporary New York and Hong Kong and beyond. This shift creates tremendous potential for dynamic action sequences... and it incorporates a love story—though perhaps not in the way audiences might expect."

Cavill's starring role in the new *Highlander* movie was first confirmed in 2021. Crowe's casting marks a reunion for the two actors, who last shared the screen in 2013's *Man of Steel*. In that DC film, Crowe played Jor-El, Superman's biological father and guide from Krypton. The new *Highlander* presents an opportunity to revisit a similar mentor-protege dynamic when it eventually premieres.

*Highlander* is slated for a theatrical release, though a specific date has not been announced. The project is a collaboration between Amazon MGM and United Artists, with a screenplay by Michael Finch, who also wrote *John Wick: Chapter 4* and *American Assassin*.

Upon the film's announcement in 2021, Cavill commented: "As someone quite accustomed to wielding a sword, and with a director as skilled as Chad Stahelski leading the charge, this is a truly unique opportunity. Delving deeply into franchise storytelling with all the creative tools available promises to make this an unforgettable adventure for me, and hopefully for all of you as well."
