Rescuing Sam During "Reckoning"

As you near the end of the main quest line, you'll discover that Sam is imprisoned at Praguer's Camp, captured by Brabant. Your opportunity to rescue him comes during the main quest "Reckoning." However, simply storming into the camp isn't an option; you'll need to choose between stealth or force.

To blend in, acquiring a guard's outfit is necessary. You can obtain one by either eliminating a guard and taking their uniform or by searching the camp's numerous chests. Once you're disguised, you can freely explore the camp in search of Sam.

Sam is located in the barn on the left side of the camp, beyond the area with the cooking fire. Access the barn by using the ladder on its side and dropping down inside, where you'll confront Brabant. Here, you face a critical decision: to kill or spare Brabant. Choosing to spare him contributes to the best ending, though the choice ultimately rests with you.

When to Rescue Sam

After freeing Sam, it's not yet time to escape with him. He'll inform you about von Aulitz, who is also held within the camp. It's advisable to deal with von Aulitz first, then secure a horse, before returning to Sam for the escape. Sam can wait safely, and this sequence simplifies the task since you'll need to carry him to the horse.

Von Aulitz is found in the camp's central area. Your guard disguise allows you to enter his quarters unchallenged. Upon finding him, von Aulitz, already on the brink of death, requests a dignified end. Granting this wish is the most honorable choice, though you can also choose to kill him brutally or leave him to suffer. Interestingly, leaving him to die also contributes to the best ending.

Your final steps involve retrieving Sam and securing a horse. Sam remains in the barn where you left him. If questioned by a guard, simply state you're moving a body to avoid suspicion. Exit the camp, turn right, and follow the perimeter to reach the stables.
