In IGN's review of Season 2, Simon Cardy noted that adapting The Last of Us Part 2's expansive and intricate story into a television series was always going to be challenging. Sony and HBO have confirmed that The Last of Us will return for a third season. While there's no official release date yet, production is set to begin this summer. The studio has clarified that this does not mean a third game is in development; Naughty Dog is focusing on their next project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Both Naughty Dog games have been remastered, with a new edition of The Last of Us Part 2 released on PC recently. Naughty Dog has also announced a new "Complete" edition of both games, set for a physical release this summer. Additionally, Sony released a special edition DualSense controller to celebrate the series.

Leading The Last of Us Season 2 are the original game’s creator, Neil Druckmann, and Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), who serve as writers alongside Haley Gross, co-writer of The Last of Us Part 2 game.
