HBO has officially announced that The Last of Us Season 2 will premiere on Sunday, April 13 at 9pm ET/PT, and it will be available to stream on Max. The season will consist of seven episodes, and to mark the occasion, HBO has released new character posters featuring Joel, Ellie, and Abby.

Set five years after the events of the first season, Season 2 finds Joel and Ellie living with Joel's brother Tommy in their commune in Montana. The upcoming season will adapt the storyline from the second game in the series, The Last of Us Part 2, which means fans of the game will have a good idea of what to expect.

Joining Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie are several new cast members, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, and Tati Gabrielle as Nora. Notably, Tati Gabrielle will also star as the main protagonist in Naughty Dog's upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

The first season of The Last of Us was a major success for HBO, created by Craig Mazin of Chernobyl fame and Neil Druckmann, the head of Naughty Dog. It won several Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and received nominations for five Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Outstanding Director, and Outstanding Writing.

Given the success of the first season, HBO is eager for more, with Francesca Orsi hinting that the series is planned to run for a total of four seasons. This means that Season 2 will not cover the entirety of The Last of Us Part 2.
