Sega's Risk-Taking Evident in Project Century and Virtua Fighter Initiatives
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) is demonstrating its capacity to handle multiple large-scale projects simultaneously, thanks to Sega's willingness to venture beyond the safety of proven formulas. Dive deeper to discover what exciting developments await from the Like a Dragon studio!
RGG Studio Has Two More Projects Coming Up
Sega Takes Risks Into New IPs And Ideas
RGG Studio, renowned as the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, is currently immersed in developing several ambitious projects, including a brand-new intellectual property. With the next installment of Like a Dragon and a Virtua Fighter remake slated for release in 2025, it's remarkable that they've also announced two additional titles. RGG Studio's head and director, Masayoshi Yokoyama, credits these opportunities to Sega's adventurous spirit, noting that the Japanese game publisher embraces risk-taking.
In early December, RGG Studio unveiled trailers for two distinct projects within the same week. At The Game Awards 2025, they introduced Project Century, a novel IP set in Japan during 1915. The following day, Sega's official channel showcased the trailer for the new Virtua Fighter Project, distinct from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster. Both projects signify the studio's grand ambitions and Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's ability to innovate and deliver, reflecting a blend of trust and a pioneering spirit.
Masayoshi Yokoyama shared with Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media, "A notable quality of Sega is its willingness to accept the possibility of failure. It doesn't just stick to what's guaranteed to succeed." He further elaborated that this risk-taking attitude is ingrained in Sega’s DNA. Reflecting on their early days with the Virtua Fighter IP, Sega's desire for something new led to the creation of the action-adventure series Shenmue, born from the question, "What if we made 'VF' into an RPG?"
Despite managing two projects simultaneously, RGG Studio is committed to maintaining high-quality standards, especially with the Virtua Fighter series. The IP's creator, Yu Suzuki, has expressed his support for the new project. Yokoyama, along with Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada and their team, are determined not to produce anything less than exceptional.
Riichiro Yamada added, "With the new 'VF,' we aim to craft something innovative that appeals to a broad audience as 'cool and interesting!' Whether you're a series enthusiast or a newcomer, we invite you to stay tuned for more details." Yokoyama echoed this sentiment, expressing his hope that gamers will eagerly anticipate both titles.
