Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Says Writer
Are you excited about Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? The director, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, is still hard at work on this project, and we've got an encouraging update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper told Screen Rant about the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
While the movie remains mostly shrouded in mystery, we do know that it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously outlined its place in the Star Wars timeline. "That's also in the future," she said of Levy's film in a February interview with Deadline. "It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the film as the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same conversation, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.
Jonathan Tropper's words are a hopeful sign that Levy's project is making progress. However, fans will need to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, for its release.
Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, several projects have been canceled, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Furthermore, a Star Wars movie originally slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey, set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently leaving after succeeding Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with a recent THR report suggesting her appearance in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
And that's not all Disney has planned for the Star Wars franchise. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy, which is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga as initially reported.
The next Star Wars content to hit your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
