Silksong Dev Hints at Nintendo Switch 2 with Cake Image

by Audrey Apr 24,2025

It's been six years since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece, Hollow Knight. Throughout these years, fans have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions with Silksong's appearances and disappearances at various gaming events. Microsoft once hinted at a launch before June 2023, but The Game Awards came and went without a whisper of Hollow Knight: Silksong. Now, with the recent announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, fans are buzzing with excitement. Could this be the moment they've been waiting for?

The buzz started with a seemingly innocuous image of a cake. Let me break it down for you.

Sharp-eyed fans on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15, Team Cherry's co-director, William Pellen, changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a photo of a chocolate cake. Accompanying this change, Pellen tweeted: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

At the time, rumors were swirling about a Nintendo Switch 2 reveal set for January 16, which indeed happened. Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2, although many questions remain unanswered about this next-gen console. Did Pellen's tweet hint at the Switch 2 reveal? If so, why?

This sparked a frenzy within the Hollow Knight community. Fans began reverse-searching the cake image, which led them to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit, published on April 2, 2024.

Why is this date significant? Because Nintendo has scheduled the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Fans are convinced that Pellen has initiated a Silksong alternate reality game (ARG) with his tweet and cake picture.

The speculation doesn't stop there. Fans are now dissecting Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr. Redditor Representative-True offers an intriguing theory: "The character limit on Twitter handles is 15 characters, which is the length of 'everydruidwaswr.' I think 'wr' is likely the start of a word, like wrong or something. I have yet to decipher this, but the Druid of the Moss Temple is a Silksong NPC."

Adding to the mystery, Pellen's new X/Twitter name is "little bomey." Fans have pointed out that Little Boomey is a wine from Southern Australia, where Team Cherry is based, although the spelling differs slightly. What could this signify?

It's important to recall that when Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced, Team Cherry confirmed launch platforms as Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. But that was six years ago. Could Nintendo have secured Hollow Knight: Silksong as a launch title for the Switch 2? Is it a timed exclusive? Or is this all just the wild speculation of fans desperate for news?

We'll have to wait a few more months to find out. In the meantime, check out everything announced at Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
