The Sims turns 25 with updates in FreePlay, livestreams and more

by Ava Mar 20,2025

The Sims turns 25 this year, and the celebrations are massive! Dozens of games in the franchise are receiving updates, including mobile titles. The Sims FreePlay, for example, is launching its "FreePlay 2000" update, a Y2K-themed throwback experience.

When discussing landmark gaming franchises, names like Doom, Wolfenstein, The Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Super Mario, and Tetris often come up. But let's not forget a giant: Maxis's The Sims, celebrating its 25th anniversary!

Initially conceived as a SimCity spin-off, The Sims revolutionized gaming by simulating the lives of everyday people. Players gained unprecedented control over their Sims' lives, from childhood to marriage, careers, parenthood, and ultimately, their demise.

Its enduring popularity across numerous iterations cemented The Sims as a major franchise, spawning an entire genre. (In fact, our company even created a dedicated website for The Sims news!) EA is marking this milestone with significant anniversary events across all platforms, from The Sims 4 to The Sims FreePlay.
