Skyblivion, a Fan Remake of Oblivion in Skyrim's Engine, Is Still Targeting This Year

by Aiden Mar 30,2025

Skyblivion, the ambitious fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using the engine of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is set to launch in 2025. This monumental project, crafted by a dedicated team of volunteer developers, represents a AAA-scale modding effort that has consumed years of meticulous work and passion.

In a recent developer update stream, the Skyblivion team reaffirmed their commitment to a 2025 release, expressing optimism about meeting or even surpassing their target date. "We hope with your support to finish the final steps in completing our dream, maybe even beating our own estimation," they shared, underscoring the importance of community support in reaching their goal.

Describing Skyblivion as merely a one-to-one remake would not do justice to the extensive enhancements being made. The developers are not only recreating the original game but also overhauling various elements to enhance the experience. This includes ensuring that unique items truly stand out and bolstering the challenge posed by existing bosses, such as the notorious Mannimarco. The team showcased the revamped "A Brush with Death" quest during their livestream, revealing a beautifully reimagined painted world.

The project's significance is heightened by rumors of an official Oblivion remake. Earlier this year, alleged details about an Oblivion remake emerged, hinting at potential changes to combat and other features. Microsoft, however, declined to comment on these rumors to IGN. Additionally, documents from the Activision Blizzard/FTC trial in 2023 inadvertently mentioned an Oblivion remaster, alongside other projects like an Indiana Jones game, which has since been released, and a Fallout 3 remaster, which remains unconfirmed.

The possibility of an official Oblivion relaunch by Microsoft and Bethesda could impact Skyblivion, given the strong modding community surrounding Bethesda's titles, from older games to the recent Starfield. The team hopes to avoid the kind of setbacks experienced by projects like Fallout London as they approach their eagerly anticipated launch.
