Sony Has Good News and Bad News on PlayStation 5 Themes

by Ryan Feb 20,2025

Sony's popular PlayStation console themes for PS5 are disappearing! The limited-time PSOne, PS2, PS3, and PS4 themes will be unavailable as of January 31, 2025. However, Sony has confirmed their return in the coming months, offering a glimmer of hope for nostalgic PS5 users who enjoyed the classic boot-up sounds and visuals.

In a recent tweet, Sony expressed gratitude for the overwhelmingly positive response to the themes, stating that they're currently working to bring these designs back.

Unfortunately, there's a downside. Sony also announced that there are no current plans to develop additional console themes for PS5 beyond these four. This news has met with some fan disappointment, as custom themes were a staple feature in previous PlayStation generations.

The temporary themes, released to celebrate PlayStation's 30th anniversary (December 3, 2024), allowed users to customize their PS5 home screens and menus with iconic elements from each console. The PSOne theme featured the original console's image, the PS2 its menu design, the PS3 its wave background, and the PS4 its signature wave patterns. All themes included the respective console's signature sound effects. While future theme releases remain uncertain, Sony's commitment to bringing back the classic themes is a positive step for fans.
