Sony Updates PSN Policy for PC, Unveils Gifts

Sony's recent policy changes regarding PC gaming have sparked significant discussion among the gaming community. Previously, the company mandated that players connect to the PlayStation Network (PSN) even for single-player games on PC, a requirement that not only frustrated many gamers but also limited the accessibility of modern releases in regions where PSN services are unavailable. However, Sony has now announced some adjustments to this policy, although the idea of tethering to PSN has not been completely abandoned.

In a move to appease gamers, Sony has decided that tethering to PSN will not be mandatory for several key titles on PC:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • God of War Ragnarok
  • The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

For those who choose to connect to PSN despite the optional nature, Sony is offering enticing incentives:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - Players will gain early access to the "2099" line of costumes for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
  • God of War Ragnarok - Users will receive the Armor of the Black Bear set, immediate access to the first "Lost Things" chest, and a set of resources at the start of the game.
  • The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered - Bonus points will be awarded to unlock various features.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered - The Nora Valiant costume will be available.

In response to investor inquiries in November, Sony's COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the opposition to the PSN connection requirement. He emphasized its importance for maintaining security and order, particularly in service-based games. However, he did not clarify how requiring a PSN account enhances the safety of single-player games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.

As gaming evolves, so too must the policies that govern it. Sony's adjustments reflect an attempt to balance security concerns with player satisfaction and accessibility.
