GameStop's Viral Switch 2 Stapler Auction Hits $100K

by Eleanor Dec 14,2025

GameStop is auctioning the notorious stapler responsible for damaging multiple Nintendo Switch 2 consoles during its launch event. All proceeds from the sale will benefit Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, with current bids exceeding $100,000.

The eBay listing includes the infamous stapler along with a certificate of authenticity, plus the first ever Switch 2 unit to suffer stapled damage — now restored to full functionality — complete with its original box bearing visible puncture marks.

"While the incident was regrettable, we believe its legacy can make a positive impact," stated GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen. In an unexpected twist, Cohen has pledged to include his own underwear as an additional item if bidding reaches six figures.

The retail chain made headlines last month after multiple customers reported their Switch 2 screens had been stapled when receipts were attached to the console boxes. Most cases originated from a single Staten Island location.

GameStop has replaced all affected consoles and leveraged the incident for social media engagement while promoting new Switch 2 inventory. However, the event has sparked discussion about Nintendo's packaging design, which leaves the console screen exposed against thin cardboard with minimal protection. IGN has reached out to Nintendo regarding potential packaging changes but hasn't received confirmation.

GameStop's certificate commemorates the stapler as "an authentic artifact from the 'Staplegate' incident" — describing how an overzealous employee permanently attached receipts to customers' new consoles during the chaotic launch. The description notes the stapler's immediate retirement after causing multiple damages, now preserved as a retail legend born from a momentary lapse in judgement.

As of this writing, the current high bid stands at $108,895.
