Suikoden 2 Anime Announced Alongside New Mobile Gacha Game

by Oliver Apr 25,2025

Earlier this week, Konami delighted classic RPG enthusiasts with a live stream dedicated to the beloved Suikoden series. The franchise, which hasn't seen a new mainline entry since a Japanese-exclusive PSP side story over a decade ago, sparked a whirlwind of anticipation and speculation. Fans were treated to a mix of exciting and controversial announcements, ranging from a Suikoden anime (yay!) to a new mobile game with gacha mechanics (oh no!).

Starting with the anime, aptly titled "Suikoden: The Anime," it will retell the events of Suikoden 2 and mark the first venture into animation by Konami. While we were only shown a brief scenery clip, it's a thrilling development for Suikoden aficionados and could serve as an excellent introduction for newcomers, assuming it becomes widely accessible outside Japan.

The second major announcement, a new game called "Suikoden Star Leap," has elicited mixed reactions from the community. The game boasts stunning visuals with 2D sprites set against 3D backgrounds reminiscent of Octopath Traveler. Set between the timelines of Suikoden 1 and Suikoden 5, it maintains the series' tradition of featuring 108 characters.

However, the decision to release Star Leap exclusively on mobile platforms and incorporate gacha mechanics and ongoing monetization has stirred disappointment among fans. The Suikoden series has always been known for its premium console and PC releases, and the introduction of gacha elements raises concerns about whether these monetization strategies will hinder players' experiences or their ability to collect all characters.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to the re-releases of Suikoden 1 and 2 with "Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars." A new trailer for this collection was showcased during the live event, and it's set to launch on March 6. This remaster offers a chance for fans to relive the classics in high definition while awaiting further developments on the new anime and mobile game.
