NBCUniversal retracts Super Mario World sequel title

by Amelia Dec 11,2025

The title of The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel may have been accidentally revealed ahead of schedule through an NBCUniversal press release. The entertainment conglomerate appeared to prematurely disclose upcoming streaming titles for Peacock, including an entry named "Super Mario World" alongside confirmed sequels like Shrek 5 and Minions 3.

Digital sleuths quickly noticed Universal Pictures hastily edited the press release to remove all Mario-related references after publication. This abrupt deletion suggests the information may have been unintentionally revealed before the planned announcement.

The original NBCUniversal document listed "Super Mario World" generically alongside "Shrek" and "Minions" – titles we know specifically represent Shrek 5 and Minions 3 respectively. This raises questions about whether "Super Mario World" represents the official sequel title or merely acts as a placeholder term.

Unlike the vague "Shrek" and "Minions" listings, "Super Mario World" carries more specificity than simply "Super Mario Bros.," suggesting potential legitimacy. The title would logically connect to Nintendo's iconic SNES platformer, making it a reasonable choice for the animated sequel.
