T-1000 Gameplay in Mortal Kombat 1 Echoes Terminator 2, Surprise Kameo DLC Revealed
NetherRealm Studios, the developers behind *Mortal Kombat 1*, have unveiled the first gameplay footage of the T-1000, a highly anticipated DLC guest character from the *Terminator* franchise. Alongside this reveal, they've confirmed Madam Bo as an upcoming DLC Kameo fighter. The T-1000's gameplay is a nostalgic nod to *Terminator 2*, showcasing iconic moves such as blade and hook arm attacks that resemble those of *Mortal Kombat* characters Baraka and Kabal. A standout moment includes the T-1000 transforming into a liquid metal blob and executing an uppercut reminiscent of Killer Instinct's Glacius.
The T-1000 is brought to life by the voice and likeness of Robert Patrick, who originally portrayed the character in the 1991 film. In the teaser, Patrick's voice is heard for the first time as the T-1000 engages in a battle with Johnny Cage, culminating in a Fatality that recreates the thrilling truck chase scene from *Terminator 2*. During this dramatic Fatality, the T-1000 morphs from the driver's seat to deliver a lethal barrage of bullets to Cage.
In a surprising announcement, NetherRealm also revealed that Madam Bo, a beloved character from the base story of *Mortal Kombat 1*, will join the game as a Kameo fighter alongside the T-1000. Madam Bo, known for her valiant defense against Smoke and his goons in the game's narrative, appears briefly in the teaser, assisting the T-1000 during a clash with Johnny Cage.
The T-1000 will be available in *Mortal Kombat 1* starting March 18 during the early access period for *Khaos Reigns* owners, with a wider release for purchase on March 25. Madam Bo will be accessible on March 18 as a free update for *Khaos Reigns* owners or as a standalone purchase.
The T-1000 marks the final character addition to *Mortal Kombat 1* as part of the *Khaos Reigns* expansion, following other notable fighters like Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Amid speculation about the game's sales performance and future content, fans are curious if NetherRealm will introduce a third set of DLC characters or a *Kombat Pack 3*.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company, remains committed to the *Mortal Kombat* franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav announced plans to focus intensely on four key titles, including *Mortal Kombat*.
In September, Ed Boon, the chief of *Mortal Kombat* development, confirmed that NetherRealm had chosen its next game project three years earlier but assured continued support for *Mortal Kombat 1* for the foreseeable future. While many fans anticipate a new entry in the *Injustice* series, NetherRealm and Warner Bros. have yet to make an official announcement. The *Injustice* series, starting with *Injustice: Gods Among Us* in 2013 and followed by *Injustice 2* in 2017, has been a significant part of NetherRealm's portfolio.
In an interview with IGN in June 2023, Boon hinted at the reasons behind the decision to release another *Mortal Kombat* game instead of an *Injustice* title, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. He emphasized that the door remains open for future *Injustice* games, stating, "Not at all," when asked if the franchise was being shelved.
