Wuthering Waves’ Kuro Games Taken Over by Tencent as Majority Shareholder

Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has significantly increased its investment in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This move grants Tencent majority ownership of Kuro Games.

Tencent's Expanded Investment in Kuro Games

Wuthering Waves’ Kuro Games Taken Over by Tencent as Majority Shareholder

Tencent's stake in Kuro Games has risen to approximately 51.4%, solidifying its position as the majority shareholder. This follows a previous investment in 2023 and the departure of other shareholders. Tencent is now the sole external investor in Kuro Games.

Maintaining Operational Independence

Despite Tencent's controlling stake, reports suggest Kuro Games will retain its operational independence. This mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement emphasizes that this acquisition will foster a more stable environment and support its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has not yet publicly commented on the acquisition.

Kuro Games' Successful Titles

Kuro Games is a prominent Chinese game developer, recognized for its successful action RPG Punishing: Gray Raven and the recently released open-world RPG Wuthering Waves. Both games have generated substantial revenue, exceeding $120 million USD each, and continue to receive regular updates. The success of Wuthering Waves is further highlighted by its nomination for the Players' Voice award at The Game Awards.
