Also known as the 28 Card Game—with only minor rule variations—this game has been a favorite among card enthusiasts for generations. It's traditionally played by four players in fixed partnerships, with partners seated opposite each other.
Game Overview
The game uses a 32-card deck from a standard 52-card pack, with eight cards per suit—hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The unique ranking of cards per suit is as follows (from highest to lowest): Jack (J), Nine (9), Ace (A), Ten (10), King (K), Queen (Q), Eight (8), and Seven (7). The objective is to win tricks containing high-value cards.
Card Scoring System
- Jacks: 3 points each
- Nines: 2 points each
- Aces: 1 point each
- Tens: 1 point each
- Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): No points
This totals 28 points across the deck. In some regional versions, an additional point is awarded for the final trick, bringing the total to 29—which explains the game’s name. However, most modern players still refer to it as "29" even when not counting that final point.
Traditionally, discarded Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives are used to indicate trumps. Each player receives one card from these ranks per suit. Meanwhile, Sixes are often used as scorekeeping tools—one red and one black Six per partnership.
