"Assassin's Creed Shadows Surpasses 2 Million Players in 2 Days, Outperforming Origins and Odyssey"
Ubisoft has celebrated another significant milestone for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, revealing that the game has now attracted 2 million players since its launch on March 20. This marks a notable increase from the 1 million players it achieved on its debut day. Ubisoft proudly stated that this surpasses the launch figures of both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey, emphasizing the game's strong start. They expressed gratitude to fans, saying, "Thank you for joining the journey in Feudal Japan!"
Despite the impressive player numbers, Ubisoft has yet to disclose official sales figures for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, it's clear that the game is performing well, particularly on Steam, where it has become the top-selling title. Ubisoft's return to Steam after years of exclusivity on the Epic Games Store has evidently paid off. At the time of writing, Assassin’s Creed Shadows had reached a concurrent player peak of 58,894 on Steam, placing it within the top 30 most-played games on the platform. This peak is expected to rise further over the opening weekend.
For context, Assassin’s Creed Origins had a peak of 41,551 players on Steam, while Odyssey reached 62,069. Given these figures, it's likely that Shadows will soon become the most-played Assassin’s Creed game on Steam.
In comparison, BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which launched on Steam on October 31, 2024, achieved a peak of 89,418 players. It's worth noting that the total concurrent player peak for Assassin’s Creed Shadows across all platforms, including PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, would be significantly higher, though exact numbers from Sony and Microsoft remain undisclosed.

The success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is crucial for Ubisoft, especially following the multiple delays and the commercial underperformance of last year's Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft has faced numerous challenges, including high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations leading up to Shadows' release. The situation became so dire that the Guillemot family, Ubisoft's founders and largest shareholders, have reportedly been in talks with Tencent and other investors about a potential buyout that would allow them to retain control.
Assassin's Creed Shadows has not been without its controversies, particularly in Japan. This week, IGN confirmed that Ubisoft released a day-one patch addressing concerns raised by Japanese politicians about the depiction of temples and shrines in the game. In a notable exchange, Japanese politician Hiroyuki Kada brought up the issue in a government meeting, prompting a response from Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
On Steam, Assassin's Creed Shadows is receiving positive feedback, with an 81% positive user review rating from over 6,000 reviews, earning it a 'very positive' label. IGN’s review of the game awarded it an 8/10, praising it for refining existing systems and delivering one of the best iterations of the open-world style Ubisoft has been developing over the last decade.
