Critical Role Video Game Announcement Could Arrive 'Any Day,' Travis Willingham Confirms

The wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of launching its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting at an imminent announcement—potentially "any day now." This exciting news emerged during a recent interview with Business Insider. While specifics regarding the game's title and its precise connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham confirmed the development team is diligently working on the project.

"They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he explained, highlighting the player agency within the game.

Willingham, himself a prominent Critical Role cast member, co-founded the company alongside fellow voice acting stars Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. Since its inception, Critical Role has expanded into a multifaceted entertainment franchise, with its Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina, a standout success.

The upcoming video game will join Critical Role's diverse portfolio of projects, though it won't necessarily be a direct adaptation of existing storylines. In December 2024, Willingham told Rolling Stone that the team was actively pursuing a video game spinoff, noting they were "starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years." Whether the game will follow a specific campaign or introduce an original narrative within the Exandria setting remains to be seen.

While a previous expectation pointed towards an announcement before the end of 2024 or early 2025, the imminent reveal now seems even closer. "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels," Willingham explained to Rolling Stone. "You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

A release date for the Critical Role video game is yet to be announced. In the meantime, fans can look forward to updates on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
