Konami Launches Suikoden STAR LEAP Mobile Game

The Suikoden series makes a comeback—sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, launching as a free-to-play title. While no official release date has been announced, it's expected to arrive later this year.

For those unfamiliar, Suikoden debuted in 1995 as a beloved RPG franchise developed by Konami under Yoshitaka Murayama's vision. Loosely inspired by the Chinese classic "Water Margin," the Japanese title "Suikoden" reflects this heritage.

Known for its political intrigue, mystical True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny, the series spans 11 entries, including spin-offs, with the last release dating back to 2012. Rather than a true sequel or revival, Konami is delivering STAR LEAP—a mobile-exclusive adaptation.

What to Expect

Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh roster while honoring the series' tradition of assembling 108 heroes. Pixel art graphics preserve the classic aesthetic—check out the first look below.

The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 world-shaping True Runes. Players follow Hou, son of a village chief, whose life takes a dramatic turn after an attack destroys his home. Joined by companions—Hisui, an emotionally constrained attendant; Shirin, a justice-driven childhood friend; and Shapur, a former general turned butler—Hou embarks on a quest to restore peace.

Not all fans are convinced though. After years awaiting a proper successor to the mainline series, some view STAR LEAP's gacha mechanics as an underwhelming compromise.
