New Mini Controller Enables Portrait Mode Gaming!
If you're a gamer who has struggled with playing vertical arcade games on your phone, you might be interested in a new solution that's hitting the scene. A modder named Max Kern has developed a unique Tate mode mini controller designed to tackle the challenges of portrait-mode gaming head-on. But does it really solve the problem?
Most gaming controllers are designed for landscape mode, similar to those used with devices like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many classic vertical shooters and retro games require you to hold your phone in portrait mode, much like you would when scrolling through Instagram.
Max Kern stepped up to address this issue by creating a compact USB-C gamepad specifically for Tate mode gaming. The beauty of this design is its simplicity; it connects directly to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.
The construction of the Tate Mode mini controller is quite impressive. Max utilized a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip and 3D-printed the case and buttons through JLCPCB. If you're interested in building one yourself, Max has generously provided a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

The controller uses the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with a wide range of platforms including Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. This versatility is remarkable for such a small device.
However, there are some concerns to consider. The design may put additional strain on the USB-C port since the gamepad supports part of the phone's weight. This means you'll need to hold both the phone and the controller carefully to avoid potential damage to the connector over time.
Feedback from the gaming community on Reddit is mixed. While some admire the ingenuity behind the project, others worry about potential hand cramps and overall comfort. It's worth noting that this isn't a commercial product but rather a DIY project. Max has made the firmware and print files available on Thingiverse and GitHub for anyone interested in experimenting with this innovative setup.
So, what's your take on this tiny gamepad? Is it a game-changer for vertical arcade gaming, or does it come with too many compromises? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
