Druckmann Talks Expanding Last of Us Beyond Games

by Aaliyah Nov 13,2025

As speculation swirls about the future of The Last of Us franchise, fans are eager to know what follows after HBO's Season 2 and 3 adapt the events of the second game. Earlier this month, creator Neil Druckmann cast uncertainty over The Last of Us Part III, stating: "All I'll say is—don’t count on seeing more of 'Last of Us.' This might be the end."

If Part III never materializes, would Naughty Dog and Druckmann continue the TV series beyond the games?

This was the question IGN posed to Druckmann during The Last of Us Season 2 premiere red carpet. He responded by confirming he's envisioned an ending for the saga but remains pragmatic, admitting uncertainty about getting to make Part III.

"Every installment needs closure," Druckmann explained. "The Last of Us Part I wasn't designed with sequels in mind—it had to stand alone. Uncharted 4 followed the same philosophy. Part II is no different. These stories must feel complete."

"I don't know how much longer I'll be creating or when opportunities might arise—so I hold nothing back."

"Currently, we have a definitive ending planned—one that would conclude this narrative arc entirely."

A major consideration is whether Druckmann could even prioritize Part III if approved, given his commitments to wrapping The Last of Us HBO series across Seasons 2-3 and developing PlayStation's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

"Right now, finishing Season 2 takes precedence," Druckmann continued. "We're close but not done yet. Fingers crossed for Season 3—there’s substantial story left from the second game."

"Beyond that, Intergalactic demands my full attention."

In February 2024, Druckmann hinted at a potential Part III concept during Grounded 2: Making The Last of Us Part 2, suggesting "one final chapter may exist."

"Part I centered on parental love, Part II on vengeance-fueled justice," he reflected. "Both had clear thematic cores that could've stood as endpoints. We're fortunate—Naughty Dog never pressures sequels. For years, no worthy concept emerged... until recently."

"While no story exists yet, I've found an idea as compelling as Parts I and II—distinct yet connecting all three. It does feel like this saga deserves proper closure."
