Avowed has achieved notable success, with both Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with the game's sales figures. In an insightful interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expanding the game's universe. While no official announcements have been made regarding the franchise's future, Patel's enthusiasm for further development is clear. She mentioned her desire to continue directing and her interest in exploring more of the world they've created, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."

Changes in Avowed During Development

The journey to Avowed's release was not without its challenges. Patel described the development process as "messy," yet ultimately successful. Initially started in 2018 amidst Obsidian's plans to sell the company, the project saw significant shifts after Microsoft's acquisition and the game's announcement in 2020. The team faced the tough decision to cut several features, including multiplayer elements, and underwent a leadership change and project reboot in January 2021.

Under Patel's leadership, managing a team of over 80 people became a focal point. She emphasized the importance of refocusing the game's direction, particularly on the narrative and lore connected to the Pillars of Eternity franchise. The switch from an open world to open zones allowed for more detailed and immersive environments. Reflecting on the development process, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics

With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity universe, Obsidian is exploring additional projects within this beloved franchise. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer revealed the studio's interest in developing a tactics game titled "Pillars: Tactics." Sawyer highlighted the widespread interest in tactics games both within the studio and among fans, yet acknowledged the challenges in defining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale.

Despite this, Sawyer remains committed to his vision for a third Pillars of Eternity game, aspiring to match the ambitious budget of Baldur's Gate 3, set at $100 million—a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.

Avowed is now available for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for more updates on the game and its potential future developments!
