A Cautious Western Expansion for Spike Chunsoft

Known for their distinctive narrative-driven games like Danganronpa and the Zero Escape series, Spike Chunsoft is strategically expanding its horizons. In a recent BitSummit Drift interview with AUTOMATON, CEO Yasuhiro Iizuka outlined this approach, emphasizing a commitment to their core audience.

"Our strength lies in content related to Japan's niche subcultures and anime," Iizuka explained. "Adventure games have been our focus, but we aim to expand by incorporating other genres."

This expansion into the West will be measured and deliberate. "We won't drastically broaden our content," Iizuka clarified. "Suddenly venturing into FPS, fighting games, or solely publishing Western titles for Western audiences would place us in an area where we lack expertise."

While Spike Chunsoft is celebrated for its "anime-style" narrative games, its portfolio is diverse. They've ventured into sports (Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games), fighting (Jump Force), and wrestling (Fire Pro Wrestling), and also publish popular Western titles in Japan, including Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, Cyberpunk 2077 (PS4), and the Witcher series.

However, fan satisfaction remains paramount for Iizuka. "We cherish our fans," he stated. "We want to become a publisher where fans return repeatedly."

While promising to deliver "the games and products they love," Iizuka also hinted at surprises. He assures fans that these surprises stem from a deep appreciation for their long-standing support. "Our fans have supported us for years, and we won't betray that trust," he affirmed.

The specifics of these surprises remain undisclosed, but Iizuka's commitment to his fans is clear. The future holds both familiar favorites and exciting new ventures for Spike Chunsoft.
