Diablo 4's 2025 Roadmap Sparks Outrage Among Hardcore Fans; Ex-Blizzard President Unsure of Game's Direction
Diablo 4 enthusiasts received their first content roadmap this week, outlining what's on the horizon for the action role-playing game through 2025, along with a sneak peek into 2026. In an exclusive IGN interview, game director Brent Gibson delved into the roadmap, covering everything from the second expansion to potential IP collaborations. However, the Diablo 4 community has voiced concerns about the content slated for 2025, questioning whether it's sufficient to keep them engaged.
"Oh boy! Can't wait for new Helltide color and temporary powers," remarked redditor Inangelion sarcastically. "It's gonna be so dope!" This sentiment resonates with many dedicated Diablo 4 players who were hoping for more thrilling updates.
"In other ARPGs, a new season might introduce a housing system where you build a home base with vendors offering unique gear, or a shipping system that allows traders from other lands to bring materials for item upgrades that fundamentally alter your class mechanics," explained feldoneq2wire. "But in Diablo 4, a new season seems to focus on changing the color of Helltides and adding new powers and cosmetic skins."
"I'm not a Diablo 4 hater; I genuinely enjoy the game, but the upcoming content feels a bit underwhelming," admitted Fragrantbutte. "The phrase 'and more' is doing a lot of heavy lifting here," echoed artyfowl444.
The online debate reached a point where Diablo community manager Lyricana_Nightrayne felt compelled to address the concerns directly on the Diablo 4 subreddit. "We've kept details light for the later parts of the roadmap to leave room for developments still in progress," they clarified. "Rest assured, there's more coming in 2025 than what's shown."
Part of the community's frustration stems from Blizzard's approach to seasonal content in Diablo 4. While some appreciate the reset each season brings, others argue it discourages deep engagement. The debate revolves around whether a more consistent seasonal content would make the game overwhelming, or if players should wait until 2026 for more substantial updates.
Mike Ybarra, former president of Blizzard Entertainment and now at Microsoft, weighed in on the issue via a post on X/Twitter. "Don't ship just to check a box," Ybarra advised. "Seasons need to break the cycle of shipping, spending two months fixing issues, and repeating. Pause and give the team time to address end-game issues. Playing for a week just to one or three shot an 'uber' boss 500 times for a unique item, then quitting until the next season, isn't fun.
"The expansion schedule is too long and should be yearly. Reduce the focus on story elements, which are costly for one-time use in an ARPG, and instead invest in new classes, mob types, and end-game activities that last longer than a few days. If the cycle continues without addressing fundamental issues, the future of Diablo is uncertain. You can add as many end-game activities as you want, but you'll be running in place with the same problems. Eventually, there are too many random elements, and it's not worth the effort."

The discussion around Diablo 4's expansions centers on the delay of the second expansion, originally planned for 2025 but now postponed to 2026. Blizzard intended to release an expansion annually, with the first, Vessel of Hatred, launching in 2024. However, the second expansion will not arrive in 2025 as initially planned.
In our interview, Gibson discussed the challenges of maintaining Diablo 4 as a live service game with free seasonal content alongside significant paid expansions. "Gamers are more hungry than ever," Gibson noted. "Even if you meet their expectations today, their desires will shift tomorrow. We need to be adaptable because priorities can change quickly based on new game releases, the state of our game, or exciting new ideas we want to implement.
"Developing in this way involves high interaction with the community. Diablo has various types of players, from casual to hardcore, each with their own preferences. We aim to address different groups with each season, focusing on their key interests. For example, in Season 8, we're responding to feedback about boss lairs with quality of life improvements, while Season 9 might focus on nightmare dungeons. This approach allows us to cater to different player types at different times, culminating in a major expansion that appeals to everyone."
Diablo 4 Season 8 is set to launch later in April, with Season 9 scheduled for the summer, and Season 10 arriving later in the year.
