Sony Exec Recalls Scrapped Nintendo PlayStation Game

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida recently shared fascinating insights into his early career and his experience with the legendary Nintendo PlayStation prototype, including playing a nearly completed game developed for the cancelled console.

In an interview with MinnMax, Yoshida recounted his journey at Sony, starting with his work alongside Ken Kutaragi, the visionary behind the original PlayStation. Joining Kutaragi's team in February 1993, Yoshida was introduced to the Nintendo PlayStation prototype almost immediately. He emphasized that this was a fully functional prototype, not just a concept.

"Everyone joining Ken Kutaragi's team around that time saw the Nintendo Sony PlayStation prototype first," Yoshida revealed. "It was already working, and they had almost finished a game for it. I even got to play it on my first day."

While Yoshida compared the game's style to a contemporary space shooter, possibly Sega CD's Silpheed, he couldn't recall the developer's identity or the game's origin (US or Japan). However, regarding the game's potential survival in Sony's archives, he expressed optimism.

"I wouldn't be surprised," Yoshida stated. "It was on a CD, so... yeah."

The Nintendo PlayStation remains a highly sought-after collector's item, largely due to its unreleased status—a tantalizing glimpse into a potential alternate gaming history. Its prototype has frequently appeared in auctions and among collectors.

The possibility of this Sony-developed space shooter seeing the light of day is intriguing. It's not unprecedented; Nintendo famously released Star Fox 2 years after its cancellation. Perhaps this lost piece of gaming history could one day resurface.
