Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated foray into feudal Japan, is set to launch on February 14th. This new installment introduces significant changes, most notably a revamped parkour system and dual protagonists with distinct playstyles.

The game's parkour mechanics have undergone a significant overhaul. Instead of the free-climbing system of previous titles, Shadows features designated "parkour highways," carefully designed climbing routes. While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, albeit requiring a more strategic approach. The addition of seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and dodges, promises a smoother and more visually appealing parkour experience. A new prone position also enables sprinting dives and slides, adding further dynamism to movement. Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois explains that this change allows for more controlled level design, particularly in differentiating the movement capabilities of the two protagonists.

Speaking of protagonists, Shadows introduces Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and navigating shadows, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai specializing in open combat who lacks climbing abilities. This dual-protagonist setup aims to appeal to both fans of classic Assassin's Creed stealth gameplay and those who prefer the more RPG-focused combat of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

The game will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. With its February release date fast approaching, Ubisoft is expected to unveil more details in the coming weeks. The game faces stiff competition from other high-profile releases in February, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed, making its success a compelling question.
