Nintendo's Emio Reveal Disappoints Some, But the Famicom Detective Club Sequel Looks to Deliver a Masterful Murder Thriller
Nintendo's latest mystery, "Emio, the Smiling Man," is the newest addition to the revived Famicom Detective Club series. Producer Sakamoto positions it as the culmination of the entire series.
Emio, the Smiling Man: A New Chapter in Famicom Detective Club
A Murder Mystery After Three Decades
The original Famicom Detective Club games, The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, debuted in the late 1980s, immersing players in Japanese countryside murder investigations. Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club continues this tradition, placing players in the Utsugi Detective Agency, tasked with solving a series of murders connected to the infamous serial killer, Emio.
Announced on July 17th, the game launches globally on August 29th, 2024, for Nintendo Switch. This marks the first new entry in 35 years, following a cryptic teaser featuring a trench-coated figure with a smiley-faced paper bag over his head.
The game's synopsis describes a student's chilling murder, mirroring unsolved cases from 18 years prior and linking to the Emio legend – a killer who leaves victims with a "smile that will last forever."
Players investigate the murder of Eisuke Sasaki, following clues to past cold cases. They'll interview classmates and others, examining crime scenes for evidence.
Assisting the investigation is Ayumi Tachibana, a returning character known for her interrogation skills, and Shunsuke Utsugi, the agency director who worked on the 18-year-old cold cases.
Divided Fan Reactions
Nintendo's cryptic teaser generated significant buzz, with one fan accurately predicting a new, darker Famicom Detective Club game. While many celebrated the series' return, others expressed disappointment, particularly those who preferred different genres. Some social media reactions highlighted surprise at the visual novel format.
Exploring Diverse Mystery Themes
Producer Yoshio Sakamoto, in a recent YouTube video, discussed the series' origins, explaining that the first two games aimed for a "solve-it-yourself movie" experience. The *Famicom Detective Club* series is lauded for its compelling narratives and atmospheric storytelling. The positive reception to the 2021 Switch remakes inspired Sakamoto to create this new installment.Sakamoto drew inspiration from horror director Dario Argento, particularly Argento's use of music and quick cuts in Deep Red, which influenced The Girl Who Stands Behind. Composer Kenji Yamamoto described creating a terrifying final scene for that game, using a dramatic volume increase for a jump scare effect.
Emio, the Smiling Man, is an original urban legend for the game. Sakamoto aims to create a thrilling experience centered on uncovering the truth behind this legend, a shift from the superstitious and ghost story themes of previous installments. The Missing Heir explored a village curse tied to the Ayashiro family's wealth, while The Girl Who Stands Behind involved a ghost story connected to a murder.
A Collaborative Creation
Sakamoto's past interviews reveal his love for horror and high school ghost stories, influencing the series' development. He also highlighted the creative freedom Nintendo provided, focusing only on the title and allowing the team to develop the narrative. The original games received positive critical reception, holding a 74/100 Metacritic score.
Sakamoto describes Emio – The Smiling Man as the culmination of the team's experience, resulting from extensive collaboration and a focus on the script and animation. He anticipates a divisive ending, hoping to spark ongoing discussion among players.
