Ex-Bethesda Dev Anticipates Fallout 3 Remaster to Enhance 'Not Good' Gun Combat

by Finn May 12,2025

With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, speculation is rife about which Bethesda classic will be next in line for a remaster. Many fans are eagerly anticipating a Fallout 3 remaster, especially after leaks surfaced in 2023. Bruce Nesmith, a designer on the original Fallout 3, has provided insights into potential improvements for a remastered version, particularly focusing on enhancing the game's gun combat.

PlaySpeaking to VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that *Fallout 3 Remastered* would feature shooting mechanics more akin to those seen in *Fallout 4*. He emphasized that *Fallout 3* was Bethesda's first foray into a shooter-style game, and while the initial attempt was commendable, significant improvements were made in *Fallout 4*. These enhancements could be expected in a remastered version of *Fallout 3*.

Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, set a high bar with its comprehensive visual and feature upgrades. Running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, the remaster also includes revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additionally, it boasts new dialogue, a refined third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. These changes have been well-received by fans, with some even suggesting that Oblivion Remastered could be considered a remake. Bethesda has clarified its decision to opt for a remaster rather than a full remake.

PlayNesmith hinted that *Fallout 3 Remastered* would likely follow a similar path, with enhancements mirroring those seen in *Oblivion Remastered*. He acknowledged that *Fallout 3*'s combat did not compare favorably to other shooters of its time, but the improvements made in *Fallout 4* could be incorporated into a remastered version. He noted that *Oblivion Remastered* went beyond merely updating to the 2011 version of *Skyrim*, aiming for a visual quality that surpasses the most recent updates to *Skyrim*. Nesmith went as far as to call *Oblivion Remastered* "Oblivion 2.0."

Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing work on Fallout 76, and the Fallout TV show, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. With these exciting developments, fans have much to look forward to in the coming years.
