Invincible Team Talks Killer Instinct, 3v3 Tag Choice at IGN Live
One of the major highlights from the Xbox Showcase was the announcement of Invincible VS, where we interviewed Skybound's Quarter Up team at IGN Live. They explained why this 3v3 fighter perfectly adapts Robert Kirkman's superhero saga, drawing inspiration from Killer Instinct.
Invincible VS brings beloved characters like Mark Grayson (Invincible), Omni-Man, Thula, Atom Eve, and Bulletproof into the arena. According to art director Dan Eder and combat designer Reepal Parbhoo, the franchise's team dynamics made the 3v3 format an obvious choice.
"The Invincible universe thrives on team conflicts," Parbhoo noted. "Whether it's Teen Team, Guardians of the Globe, or Viltrumite squads, having multiple combatants just makes sense for this world."
The development team prioritized authentic character representation, carefully balancing visual elements from both the comics and animated series.
"We aimed to do justice to these characters," Eder explained. "We developed a unique 2D-3D hybrid style with realistic lighting and outlines to capture the Invincible aesthetic while adapting it for gaming."
The combat system incorporates mechanics from Killer Instinct while evolving them for team battles.
"We preserved Killer Instinct's impactful strikes and defensive counterplay," Parbhoo said, "but modified combo breakers for assist-based interrupts that maintain combo flow."
The game features streamlined controls including auto-combos for casual players, plus a brutal Overkill system reflecting the comics' visceral action.
"This isn't pulling punches," Parbhoo joked. "You'll hit opponents hard enough to lose limbs - that's authentic Invincible combat."
Series creator Robert Kirkman actively contributes to development, ensuring faithfulness while encouraging creative expansions.
"Robert's insights are invaluable," Eder said. "We're not just recreating moments - we're enhancing them with his guidance and the original artists' perspectives."
Invincible VS launches in 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. For more reveals, explore highlights from IGN Live and the Xbox Games Showcase.
