Jacksepticeye's Unannounced Soma Animated Show Falls Apart Unexpectedly
YouTuber Jacksepticeye, whose real name is Seán William McLoughlin, recently shared in his video titled 'A Bad Month' that he spent a year working on a Soma animated show, only for the project to fall apart, leaving him "quite upset." Soma, a critically acclaimed survival horror science fiction video game developed by Frictional Games, was released in 2015. Jacksepticeye, a fan of the game, streamed it extensively upon its release and often cites it as one of his top favorites.
In the video, Jacksepticeye discussed a challenging period in his creative endeavors, mentioning several projects that either got canceled or didn't progress far enough to be shown to his fans. He specifically revealed the Soma animated show, expressing his deep disappointment over its abrupt cancellation. Jacksepticeye had been in discussions with the game's developers for a year and was ready to go into full production. His excitement stemmed from his love for Soma, which he ranks among the best video games due to its compelling story.
The project fell apart after an unnamed party suggested they wanted to take the show "in a different direction," a decision that left Jacksepticeye quite upset. He chose not to delve into specifics, but the sudden change in direction significantly disrupted his plans for 2025. He had planned to focus much of his year on the project, which would have allowed him to create something special to share with his audience. The cancellation left him feeling frustrated and uncertain about his priorities and future projects.
Following the release of Soma, Frictional Games launched two more Amnesia games: Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020 and Amnesia: The Bunker in 2023. In July 2023, Frictional's creative director, Thomas Grip, mentioned the company's intention to shift focus away from horror games to explore other emotional qualities in gaming. Grip emphasized the importance of immersive fantasy in their games, whether it's being a World War 1 soldier or a robot at the ocean's bottom, and highlighted their interest in exploring themes beyond just horror.
