Team Fortress 2 Modders Rejoice as Valve Releases Full Client and Server Game Code

by Elijah Mar 06,2025

Valve's Source SDK receives a massive update, granting full access to Team Fortress 2's codebase! This unprecedented move allows modders to create entirely new games based on TF2, going far beyond the limitations of Steam Workshop or standard modding.

This open-source access empowers creators to modify, expand, and even completely rewrite Team Fortress 2 in innovative ways. While commercialization is prohibited, meaning all derived content must be free and non-commercial, these creations can be published on the Steam Store, listed as independent games.

Valve's decision stems from a deep appreciation for the TF2 community's contributions. The company acknowledges the significant player investment in TF2 inventories and the vast amount of community-created content on the Steam Workshop. To maintain this respect, Valve requests that modders refrain from profiting from the work of Workshop contributors. Ideally, mods would continue to allow players to utilize their existing TF2 inventories.

This update isn't limited to Team Fortress 2. Valve is also implementing a significant update across its back-catalog of multiplayer Source engine titles, including DoD:S, HL2:DM, CS:S, and HLDM:S. Key improvements include 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and numerous other enhancements.

This news follows the December release of the seventh and final update to the Team Fortress 2 comic, a seven-year journey that showcased Valve's ongoing commitment to this long-standing franchise and provided fans with rich lore and character development.
