Exoborne: Innovative Extraction Shooter Unveiled
Exoborne: A High-Octane Extraction Shooter Preview
Get in, grab the loot, and escape. That's the core gameplay loop of Exoborne, an upcoming extraction shooter that elevates the genre with powerful Exo-Rigs, dynamic weather effects, and the ever-popular grappling hook. After a recent 4-5 hour preview, Exoborne shows strong potential, though some aspects require further refinement.
The Exo-Rigs are central to Exoborne's identity. Three distinct suits are currently available: the Kodiak (shield, powerful ground slam), the Viper (health regeneration on kills, strong melee), and the Kerstrel (enhanced mobility, hover ability). Each rig boasts unique modules for further customization. While the grappling hook adds a satisfying Spider-Man-esque element, the limited number of Exo-Rigs feels restrictive, leaving room for future expansion.
Gunplay is satisfying, with weighty recoil and impactful melee attacks. The grappling hook facilitates swift traversal, complementing the map's design. Dynamic weather events, including tornadoes and rain, significantly impact gameplay, adding both challenges and opportunities for strategic movement. Fire tornadoes offer a risky but rewarding shortcut, but getting too close can be fatal.
Risk and Reward Mechanics
Risk versus reward permeates Exoborne's design. A 20-minute timer initiates upon deployment, culminating in a location broadcast to other players, triggering a 10-minute extraction window. Delaying extraction increases loot potential, found throughout the environment and on defeated enemies. However, the most valuable loot is often found on other players, creating intense player-versus-player (PvP) encounters.
Artifacts, high-value loot containers requiring keys, present a significant challenge. Their locations are visible to all players, encouraging conflict. Heavily guarded high-value areas further incentivize risk-taking for substantial rewards. Even when downed, players aren't immediately eliminated; self-revives and teammate revives provide a fighting chance, though this window is time-sensitive and vulnerable to enemy attacks.
Areas for Improvement
Two key areas require attention. Exoborne strongly favors teamwork, potentially alienating solo players or those without a dedicated squad. The non-free-to-play model exacerbates this issue. Furthermore, the late-game remains unclear; while PvP encounters were enjoyable, the frequency felt insufficient to sustain engagement solely based on PvP. The developer, Shark Mob, has indicated future plans for late-game content focused on PvP player comparisons but specifics are pending.
Exoborne's PC playtest (February 12-17) will be crucial in assessing these aspects and shaping the final product.
