Bioshock Creator Was Shocked by Irrational Games Closure

Irrational Games' Closure: A Retrospective from BioShock Infinite's Ken Levine

Ken Levine, creative director behind the acclaimed BioShock Infinite, recently reflected on the unexpected closure of Irrational Games following the game's success. He described the decision as "complicated," revealing that the studio's shuttering came as a surprise to most, including himself. While he intended to leave Irrational, he anticipated the studio's continuation under Take-Two Interactive's ownership. "I thought they were going to continue. But it wasn’t my company," he stated in an interview with Edge Magazine.

Levine's personal struggles during BioShock Infinite's development contributed to his departure, impacting his leadership abilities. He acknowledged, "I don’t think I was in any state to be a good leader." Despite the difficult circumstances, he strived to ensure a "least painful lay-off" for his team, providing transition packages and ongoing support.

The closure of Irrational, known for its contributions to the horror RPG genre with System Shock 2 and the BioShock franchise, left a significant mark on the industry. Levine even suggested that Irrational could have successfully tackled a BioShock remake, given the studio's talent.

Looking ahead to the anticipated BioShock 4, currently in development at Cloud Chamber Studios, many fans hope the developers will learn from the experiences surrounding BioShock Infinite's release. While an official release date remains unannounced, speculation points towards an open-world setting, retaining the series' signature first-person perspective.
