"EA: Next Battlefield Game Slated for Fiscal Year 2026"
The excitement is building as EA has officially announced that the next installment in the iconic Battlefield series is slated for release within their fiscal year 2026, spanning from April 2025 to March 2026. This announcement came alongside the company's financial results for the third quarter of the current fiscal year, ending in March 2025.
This week, EA provided a tantalizing first look at the new Battlefield game, showcasing pre-alpha gameplay footage as part of a broader announcement about player testing and the development setup. The snippet was introduced through a video that unveiled "Battlefield Labs," a new initiative aimed at player-driven testing and innovation. This approach underscores EA's commitment to refining the game ahead of its anticipated launch.
In a significant development move, EA introduced "Battlefield Studios," an umbrella brand encompassing four dedicated studios: DICE in Stockholm, Sweden, focusing on multiplayer; Motive, known for the Dead Space remake and Star Wars: Squadrons, handling single-player missions and multiplayer maps; Ripple Effect in the U.S., tasked with attracting new players; and Criterion in the UK, which has shifted its focus from Need For Speed to the single-player campaign of the new Battlefield.
EA emphasized that the collective efforts of these studios are now entering a "critical" phase of development. They are eager to incorporate player feedback to prioritize, improve, and refine the game before its release. To this end, Battlefield Labs will allow EA to test almost everything, though not all elements will be fully developed. Participants in these tests will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
Despite being in the pre-alpha stage, EA expressed pride in the game's progress, highlighting their continuous playtesting efforts and the invaluable role of player feedback in enhancing the game's "form, function, and feel." The testing will cover core elements like combat and destruction, moving on to weapon, vehicle, and gadget balance, and ultimately to the integration of these components within the game's maps, modes, and squad play. EA also confirmed that classic modes like Conquest and Breakthrough will be tested, alongside explorations into new ideas and improvements to the class system (Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon) for deeper, more strategic gameplay.
It's noteworthy that while EA is heavily investing in this new Battlefield, they closed Ridgeline Games last year, a studio working on a standalone single-player Battlefield game with a story focus, resulting in staff layoffs.
In September, EA shared more about the untitled Battlefield game, including its return to a modern setting following previous games set in World War I, World War II, and the near future. Concept art suggested the inclusion of ship-to-ship and helicopter combat, as well as natural disasters like wildfires. Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn & Group GM for EA Studios Organization, highlighted the significance of returning to the modern setting reminiscent of Battlefield 3 and 4, which he described as the "pinnacle of Battlefield."
The next Battlefield game aims to correct the course after the mixed reception of Battlefield 2042, which initially struggled with its 128-player maps and the controversial Specialist system. The new game will revert to 64-player maps and eliminate Specialists, focusing on core elements that have historically defined the series.
With EA CEO Andrew Wilson labeling this as one of the "most ambitious projects in [EA's] history," and the significant investment in the form of multiple studios, the pressure is on to deliver a game that not only satisfies long-time fans but also attracts new players to the Battlefield universe. The overarching goal, as Zampella stated, is to expand the offerings within the Battlefield universe, ensuring players don't need to look elsewhere for varied gaming experiences.
While EA has yet to announce the launch platforms or the final title for the new Battlefield, the anticipation and expectations are high for this next chapter in the storied franchise.
