Nvidia's DLSS 4: 8X Performance Boost with Multi-Frame Generation

Nvidia has unveiled DLSS 4 at CES 2025, a significant leap in AI-powered upscaling technology, exclusively for the new GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs. This iteration introduces Multi-Frame Generation (MFG), capable of generating up to three additional frames per rendered frame, resulting in up to an 8X performance increase. This allows for 4K gaming at 240 FPS with full ray tracing enabled.

DLSS 4 builds upon previous iterations, leveraging advanced AI models, including the first real-time application of transformer-based AI in graphics. This enhances image quality, improves temporal stability, and minimizes visual artifacts. The new AI models also contribute to a 40% acceleration in frame generation and a 30% reduction in VRAM usage. Hardware optimizations, such as Flip Metering and upgraded Tensor Cores, further contribute to smoother frame pacing and high-resolution support. Games like Warhammer 40,000: Darktide already showcase the benefits of these improvements. Features like Ray Reconstruction and Super Resolution, powered by vision transformers, ensure highly detailed and stable visuals, especially in ray-traced scenes.

Backward compatibility is a key feature. At launch, 75 games and applications will support MFG, with over 50 integrating the new transformer-based models. Major titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 will have native support. Nvidia's application includes an Override feature to enable MFG and other enhancements for older DLSS integrations.
