Sony Issues DMCA to Bloodborne 60fps Patch Creator: Timing Questioned

by Hazel Apr 03,2025

The creator of the widely-discussed Bloodborne 60fps patch, Lance McDonald, has announced that he received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment. In a tweet, McDonald explained that he complied with the request and removed the links to the patch he had shared online. He also referenced a YouTube video he created about the patch back in 2021 and shared a humorous anecdote about meeting former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, where he mentioned his work on the 60fps mod for Bloodborne.

Bloodborne, developed by FromSoftware and released on the PS4, remains a highly acclaimed yet untouched title by Sony. Fans have been clamoring for an official next-generation patch to boost the game's frame rate from 30fps to 60fps, as well as a remaster or a sequel. In the absence of official updates, enthusiasts like McDonald have stepped in to address these demands. Recently, the use of PS4 emulators, such as ShadPS4, has allowed fans to experience a version of Bloodborne running at 60fps on PCs, a development covered by Digital Foundry. This progress in emulation technology might have prompted Sony's stringent response, though IGN has reached out to Sony for further clarification.

Shuhei Yoshida, in a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games, shared his theory on why Bloodborne hasn't seen any updates or remasters. He suggested that FromSoftware's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, who is deeply attached to the game, might be too busy to work on it himself and unwilling to let others handle it. Yoshida emphasized that this was just his personal theory and not an insider's revelation.

Despite the game's inactivity nearly a decade after its release, there remains a glimmer of hope. In previous interviews, Miyazaki has hinted at the potential benefits of porting Bloodborne to more modern hardware, although he often deflects direct questions about the game's future, citing that FromSoftware does not own the IP.
